Dan Reed Network’ Let’s Hear It For The King – Metal Planet Music

Review by Maria Glover for MPM

As I unveil Dan Reed Network’s sixth album, 10 years after their reunion in 2012, I don’t expect a totally unique or innovative adventure, but more classic and much-loved DRN grooves and funk.

I’m not surprised that this album bears a strong resemblance to DRN’s definitive sound and I’m enjoying it more than I expected if I’m being honest.

From the well-written and nuanced ‘The Ghost Inside’ to the light and undemanding ‘Starlight’, to the funk and bounce you won’t have experienced in a while in ‘Stumble’ and ‘Supernova’, this album has all the elements to set the beating heart of all DRN fans around the world.

Opener track ‘Pretty Karma’ opens with a gnarly beat then the riff kicks in, the soft, thumping vocals heading into a catchy chorus where it can take flight. ‘Supernova’ is effervescent and a real guilty pleasure with its pop-py side.

The title track is loaded with attitude, deftly weaved to reveal new elements with each listen, and incredibly melodic as society is assessed and critiqued. “Where is the revolution” throws me like the love child of the Backstreet Boys and Shena Easton. And I like it!

There’s emotion and emotion in “I See Angels,” and news or announcer-like voiceovers (“Homegrown” and “Supernova”).

Jerky rhythm meets heavy riffs and is joined in the party by saxophone in the funky as hell ‘Homegrown’ which must be a highlight for anyone with a gift of hearing.

The heavier intro of ‘Are You Ready’ refocuses my attention before the final track and aptly named ‘Unfuck My World’. Intense and brooding to begin with, the sweet request is delivered with fabulous aplomb and a delightfully harmonious and suave voice.

As part of an impressive back catalog and with Dan Reed Network’s loyal fan base, this is a great album. Will it hold my attention when I’m battling all the other music in my inbox, I’m not sure to be honest, but I keep finding new parts, so who knows.

Definitely a must for all DRN fans and worth a try if you’ve never heard of it.
